Falcon Lake region, 1967 wave
Falcon Lake was not a single event. Through the summer of 1967, reports clustered across southeastern Manitoba, which is why Defence ministers were questioned in the press and why the file stayed closed.
The record
By 30 June 1967 the press was reporting that Michalak's case was under Defence investigation amid a surge of reports in the area, and by November 1967 newspaper comic strips were dramatising the case.
By the following year, Michalak himself was publicly alleging a cover-up to avoid a panic, and editorials were pressing for release of the file.
The 1967 concentration of reports across Manitoba and eastern Canada is the closest Canada came to the kind of wave that made the US records newsworthy - and the official response was closure, not study.
