Clarenville
A cigar-shaped object with a curved tail was seen by police at Clarenville, who used a ball-scope and a size estimate; DND radar at Gander was alerted.
The record
Const. Blackwood is recorded as using a ball-scope - a device borrowed from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police traffic bureau for estimating distance and size - and reporting the object at roughly forty feet across, hovering about five hundred feet above sea level.
Defence radar at Gander was tasked with tracking it. The estimate is a witness estimate through an optical device, not an instrument measurement, and the file has not been read directly.
October and November 1978 produced a run of reports up the Labrador coast, in Lethbridge, Catalina, Gander, St. Anthony and north, according to a published maritime case collection.
Thin sourcing — verify before citing
This case is included because gaps are worse than thin records, but the sourcing is partial. Do not build on it without reading the original file.
